World Food Day 2024, 16 October

Theme: Right to foods for a better life and a better future

The Native Foodscape Foundation, in collaboration with the Himalayan University Consortium and Holy Cross School Dimapur in Nagaland, observed the United Nations' World Food Day (WFD) on October 16, 2024, through a series of engaging activities. This event was organized in alignment with the World Food Day initiatives established by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization, aimed at celebrating the rich and diverse culinary heritage of the Hill and Mountain People.

The students of Class XII from Holy Cross School participated in a month-long project leading up to World Food Day on October 16, 2024. They were divided into eleven groups, with each group representing one of the indigenous tribes of Nagaland. The students engaged in research projects focusing on the traditional foods of these tribes.

On the final day, each group presented their findings through discussions, posters, and food samples. The sharing of various dishes sparked meaningful conversations about cultural preservation. This event not only celebrated food but also highlighted the significance of culture and community, ultimately enhancing the students' appreciation for the diversity of indigenous cuisine. The occasion was honoured by the presence of the School's Principal, Rev. Fr. Philip, with activities conducted under the guidance of Miss Temsumenla, the School Counsellor. The top five presentations were awarded to representatives from the Phom, Yimkhiung, Lotha, Sangtam, and Ao tribes.

A panel of judges selected the best 5 presentations, who awarded prizes sponsored by NFF. Dr. Chubbamenla Jamir, Director & Cofounder of Native Foodscape Foundation, along with Dr. Grady Walker, Senior Researcher at the University of Reading, UK, and Co-Lead for the HUC TWG Mountain Agriculture, presented prizes to the winning teams and certificates of participation to all participants on November 15, 2024.
